Barbie Celebrates 50 years at Macdonald Museum

Icons around the world are celebrating their birthdays. First it was Hello Kitty, now it's Barbie. The Macdonald Museum celebrates 50 years of Barbie. The exhibit has both old and new Barbies and the museum is also throwing her Birthday Party on July 29th.

The museum feature Barbie, her cousins, her sisters and brothers an her pets, so many it's basically hard to count. However, if you've admired Barbie, but never became a collector, the story of her beginnings may be a surprise to you. According to Nova News Now:

"In 1959, a woman named Ruth Handler noticed that her small daughter rarely ever played with dolls in her own age group -- rather, she preferred teenage paper dolls with fashions and accessories. Working within the company founded by her husband Elliot and his business partner Harold Mattson, she helped to develop Mattel’s first Barbie. She was a leggy blonde in a black-and-white swimsuit, marketed as a teen fashion doll; the company had no way of knowing they had created a line of toys that would dominate shelves for years to come. "

Happy Birthday Barbie.
