Abaya
This is the traditional form of hijab, or Islamic dress, which many countries in the Arabian Peninsula such as Saudi Arabia or United Arab Emirates, making it a national dress. Contrary to popular belief, such as the abaya is not mandated by the Qur'an.
Traditional black abaya and a large square of cloth draped from the shoulders or heads or long robes. Abaya covers the whole body except the face, legs, and hands. This can be worn with a niqab, a veil covering the face except the eyes. Some women choose to wear long black gloves, so that their hands are covered as well.
Saudi Arabia requires women to cover their shame in public. Includes enforced by religious police, the muṭṭawwi'īn (also known as muttawwa). In Iran the cover is often referred to as the veil. In South Asia, known as a burqa. Muslim women living in the West also cover themselves as part of the Islamic religion and culture.
Abaya is known by various names, but all the same aim, namely to cover the private parts. Contemporary models are usually caftan, cut from light, flowing fabrics like crepe, georgette, and chiffon. Styles differ from region to region: some abayat has embroidered black material while others are brightly colored and has a variety of art forms in several countries.
